Brecknock Township is a Township of the Second Class, under the Pennsylvania Code, which establishes a three-member board as the governing body. The Board of Supervisors is responsible for the general legislative and executive functions of the Township; including setting policy, approval of expenditures, budgets, subdivision and zoning changes, care of roads and bridges, as well as hiring personnel and appointing officials to Boards and Commissions. Supervisors are elected in municipal elections for a six year term.

The Planning Commission is responsible for reviews of subdivision plans submitted under the Township's subdivision ordinance; these plans include the subdivision of land, adjustment of lot lines, and development of lots for commercial and residential uses. The Commission consists of five members who serve four-year terms and are community residents appointed by the Board of Supervisors.

The Zoning Hearing Board has the responsibility of hearing and rendering decisions on applications for zoning variances or special exceptions. Members are residents of the community and serve three-year terms and are appointed by the Township Supervisors.

The Recreation Board is responsible for supervising, regulating, equipping and maintaining Township-funded recreation Programs and Facilities. The Recreation Board shall consist of five members appointed for five year terms.
