THE BARNS OF BRECKNOCK TOWNSHIP

THE BARNS OF BRECKNOCK TOWNSHIP, BERKS COUNTY

Since the establishment of Brecknock Township when Berks County was founded in 1752, agriculture has been a mainstay of the local economy. This heritage can best be seen in the large assortment of traditional barns dotting the local landscape. There are over 60 barns located throughout the township representing over 100 years of various traditional construction styles from the early 19th century to the early 20th century.

The Brecknock Township Recreation Board will have local resident Christopher Witmer present a talk regarding a study that was conducted to investigate the heritage of these structures. On Thursday, May 25th 2023, Chris will present a Power Point presentation open to the public at the Brecknock Township municipal building at 7 pm. It will look at findings of this study and how the barns were used in the traditional agricultural practices of the community.
